CHOOSE THE IDEAL COVER FOR YOUR CAMPER: Comparison of Materials

There are a multitude of seat covers on the market, each with different characteristics, properties, appearance and shape. We will discuss the characteristics of the materials, as well as the function of each one and which one best suits the user's needs.

Materials and characteristics

In the manufacture of seat covers, fabrics such as Polyester, Cotton, Elastane, PVC or PU are normally used as the main product materials. We will describe the properties of each and how each material can provide an improvement to the seat covers.

Polyester: Durability and Resistance.

  • Durability: Polyester is known for its durability, wear and wrinkle resistance.
  • Resistance: Excellent resistance to abrasion and external elements, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
  • Fast Drying: Absorbs little moisture, allowing quick drying.

Cotton: Comfort and breathability.

  • Comfort: Cotton is soft and comfortable, perfect for everyday wear.
  • Breathability: Allows air to circulate, making it a cool and breathable option.
  • Moisture Absorption: Absorbs and retains moisture, so it takes longer to dry. Easier to soil.

Elastane: Elasticity and Flexibility

  • Elasticity: Elastane is known for its ability to stretch, providing great flexibility.
  • Fit: Provides comfort and fit to garments, being common in sportswear.
  • Shape maintenance: Contributes to maintaining the original shape of the garment.

PVC: Impermeability and Resistance

  • Waterproofing: PVC is waterproof, it protects from liquids and humidity.
  • Resistance: Offers resistance to chemicals, oils and abrasions.
  • Weight and Stiffness: It can be heavier and stiffer compared to other fabrics, making it suitable for waterproof and resistant products.

PU: Durability and impermeability

  • Durability: PU is known to be tough and durable, making it a perfect choice for products that require wear resistance.
  • Water repellency: One of the key advantages is its ability to repel water, ideal for garments and accessories that need to be waterproof.
  • Flexibility: PU is flexible, providing comfort and freedom of movement in garments and accessories.

The Key to Protection: Waterproofing in Camper Covers

At Glassy Europe we have found the key to protecting the seats of vans, campers, 4×4's and motorhomes. After many years of study, and testing different fabrics in the worst possible scenarios, we have found the perfect combination of materials to create the ultimate seat cover.

As we have seen above in the material characteristics, for our waterproof seat covers we have created a 3-layer fabric that combines the strength of polyester, the waterproofness of PU and the softness of cotton.

On the one hand, a polyester Oxford fabric as the main one, which is the visible fabric and the one that resists contact with the user. As we have seen, it is a fabric that does not absorb humidity, thus avoiding dirt, and it is easily cleaned, since it does not adhere to the fabric.

On the other hand, we use PU fabric on the inner side of the main polyester fabric. This has the function of making a waterproof screen between the cover and the seat. This screen is sufficiently waterproof to prevent a liquid spilled on the cover from leaking onto the seat for hours, but under pressure it is possible that some moisture may seep through after a long time. This is because the PU fabric does not make a total waterproof screen in order to provide a point of breathability between the seat and the user.

The third fabric used is a polyester inner lining with a cotton touch, which ensures that the contact and friction of the cover with the seat is soft and does not damage the original upholstery of the seat.

In addition to the 3-layer main fabric used, we use a fabric with elastane, which, thanks to its elasticity, adjusts to the different shapes of the seats, and makes the cover fit most camper seats.
